The Norman-McLendon Facility is a secure (locked) 16-bed male residential facility in Greenville, Alabama providing specialized care for two populations: (1) individuals with a serious mental illness who have been found incompetent to stand trial by a certified forensic examiner, and (2) individuals adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI) who have been released under a conditional release order and are now facing revocation of that order. The facility provides psychiatric treatment, an on-site Rehabilitative Day Program, competency restoration programming, and 24-hour supervised living. It is certified as a DMH Designated Mental Health Facility and accepts admissions from any county in Alabama.

What the Norman-McLendon Facility offers
Competency Restoration
A structured competency education program combined with psychiatric treatment to restore individuals to competency as ordered by the courts.
On-Site Rehabilitative Day Program
Group therapy, individual therapy, basic living skills training, and structured daily programming delivered through an in-house Rehabilitative Day Program.
Psychiatric Treatment
Psychiatrist makes rounds two non-consecutive days per week and is on-call 7 days per week. Psychiatric assessments and treatment to support return to recovery.
Legal System Coordination
Staff coordinate with circuit courts, the ADMH Forensics Department, and legal representatives. Intensive Case Management facilitates discharge planning and diversion from state hospitalization.
Group, Individual & Family Therapy
Comprehensive therapy as clinically indicated alongside the Rehabilitative Day Program.
Full Residential Support
Assistance with medication management, basic living skills (money management, meal prep, personal hygiene), benefits, vocational services, community orientation, and recreation.
Who is admitted to the Norman-McLendon Facility
Prospective residents must be 18 or older, male, medically stable, willing to participate in daily structured activities, and carry a principal psychiatric diagnosis (SMI) requiring 24-hour protective oversight. The facility accepts admissions from any county in Alabama.
- Individuals found incompetent to stand trial by a certified forensic examiner
- Individuals adjudicated NGRI, released under a conditional release order, and now facing revocation of that order
- Must be 18+, male, medically stable, willing to participate in structured daily activities, and in need of 24-hour protective oversight
- Does NOT admit: Not involved with the court system; primary diagnosis of SUD, ASD, Developmental/Intellectual Disability, TBI, or Organic Mental Disorder
- Does NOT admit: Severe destructive or combative behavior; lacks minimal self-care skills (feeding, bathing, dressing, toileting)
Norman-McLendon Facility — Greenville, Alabama
Located at 189 Industrial Parkway, Greenville, Alabama 36037. Operated 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Statewide admissions accepted. Staff do not serve as legal guardians — referrals to DHR or Probate Court are provided for consumers who may need a guardian while in the program. Expected length of stay: 6–12 months. Since residents are under court orders, length of stay may be extended as required by the court or while awaiting return to jail.
