A community alternative to psychiatric hospitalization

The Crisis Residential Unit (CRU) at the Montezuma Complex in Andalusia is a secure (locked), co-ed 16-bed facility that provides a level of service near to, but not as intense as, acute hospital care. Expected length of stay is 6–12 months. The CRU includes an on-site Adult Intensive Day Treatment (AIDT) program and accepts both voluntary and involuntary admissions. Priority is given to residents of Coffee, Covington, Butler, Crenshaw, Conecuh, Clarke, Escambia, and Monroe Counties, though referrals from outside the area are accepted.

What the CRU offers

On-Site Day Treatment

An embedded Adult Intensive Day Treatment (AIDT) program providing structured therapeutic programming for all residents.

Group & Individual Therapy

Regular group, individual, and family therapy tailored to each consumer's individualized treatment plan.

Medication Management

Psychiatric assessments and treatment; psychiatrist makes rounds twice weekly and is on-call 7 days per week.

Safe Living Environment

Three meals and two snacks daily, covered smoking areas, and 24-hour awake staff supervision.

Discharge Planning

Intensive case management to facilitate discharge to the least restrictive setting and prevent rehospitalization.

Hospital Step-Down

Designed to step consumers down from acute care and stabilize them for successful community reintegration.

Admissions

Who Qualifies for the Crisis Residential Unit

Prospective residents must be 18 years or older, medically stable, willing to participate in structured activities, and carry a principal psychiatric diagnosis (SMI) requiring 24-hour protective oversight.

  • Impaired contact with reality (hallucinations, delusions, or ideas of reference)
  • Withdrawal, regression, or confusion not warranting inpatient hospitalization
  • Moderate to severe disabling depression, anxiety, or somatic symptoms
  • Poor medication compliance, socialization skills, or problem-solving skills
  • Does NOT qualify: Active suicidal/self-mutilation behavior or history of elopement
  • Does NOT qualify: Primary diagnosis of Substance Use Disorder, ASD, Developmental Disability, TBI, or Organic Mental Disorder

The CRU primarily serves consumers from Butler, Crenshaw, Coffee, Covington, Conecuh, Clarke, Escambia, and Monroe Counties, and accepts statewide referrals for those who meet admission criteria. Staff do not serve as legal guardians — referrals to DHR or Probate Court are provided as needed. Bed availability is limited and consumers may be placed on a waiting list.
